Who Am I
Hi! My name is Nina and I'm currently a rising junior studying Environmental Geosciences at Georgia State University. As part of my quest to save the planet by doing as much science as I can, I found an opportunity to work for the summer at a geotechnical laboratory in the UK. This blog is my attempt to document as much of it as possible!
After I graduate, I really want to go into environmental research, specifically in the field of water and marine sciences. In the past, I completed a research project studying the application of Porphyrin-doped Sol-gels as reusable heavy metal sensors for use in polluted water sources, and that got me really interested in the field of research. Now, I hope this internship will give me insight into the corporate world of Geosciences and experience in a laboratory outside the scope of a university setting.

What is SOCOTEC?
"SOCOTEC is a leading inspection, testing and compliance company, boasting a UK-wide network of laboratories and technical experts." - SOCOTEC UK
I work for the Environmental Science Division at SOCOTEC Bretby. Within this division, there are labs specializing in Radioactivity, Renewable Energy, Organic Chemistry, and Advanced Chemistry & Research. Each of these labs works to test a variety of samples for pollutants and harmful substances so that clients know exactly what they are working with and how to prevent those pollutants from being released into the environment.
